There were general claims that AI would never ever be able to create art.
These claims never came with a definition of what "art" is.
Hence IT people built the first image generator to prove the all mighty power of their logical minds.
Not a single IT guy who layed the foundation for the picture generators had any financial goal. The people who are able to conceptually invent algorithms underpinning the generators run around with unbuttoned shirts because their mind is full with maths and programming languages.
Back then it indeed was all about progress and exploration. Only later on some greedy people entered the stage and turned the idea into a profitable product. The first Dall-E as free.
