Yeah the term was borrowed from aircraft tech which only kept the plane flying steady and straight. Tesla autopilot is actually a bit more capable than that, in its own domain. It was the film industry that misled some people about its capabilities.
And of course anyone that doesn’t know the difference between FSD and Autopilot really should educate themselves here.
