No, you don't have to be very smart at all. You just have to accept that LLMs do not think. They simply form words and sentences that SOUND ABOUT RIGHT. Something that sounds about right rarely is. It isn't that when humans do this and it isn't when machines imitate humans doing it. The technical term is "having a bullshit detector".
