@freerangesimp People are free to give away whatever they want, but professionals will want compensation for their work. Those "Evil Corporations" hogging copyrights are paying writers and artists for their labor and copyrights, unlike Sam Altman and his colleagues.
Feel free to explain how AI manages to generate near identical images and text without the data being 'stored' in some fashion. (search for the article "We Asked A.I. to Create the Joker. It Generated a Copyrighted Image"). Just because there's not a text string or recognizable file doesn't mean the data isn't there; it's just a novel way of storage.
As far as nepo babies go, here's what I mean. You might get your news from a nonprofit blogger, but a lot of people want news from professional reporters. Including that blogger, who probably isn't filing FOIAs and interviewing people; they rely on professional reporters too.
The NYT is suing OpenAI because they're getting scraped, and their content served up as quick AI answers on a large scale... so less people visit the original source, driving down readership stats.
Here's a timeline of their involvement w/ OpenAI in context (more for my interest than yours, perhaps):
2019: OpenAI moves from nonprofit to capped profit model
6/21 Suchir joins OpenAI, tasked with gathering training data
9/23 Authors Guild sues OpenAI
4/24 New York Times sues OpenAI
5/24 Court disclosures reveal OpenAI destroyed book datasets used to train GPT, employees involved are "no longer employed there"
8/24, Suchir leaves OpenAI.
10/24, Suchir does interview with NYT
10/24 OpenAI raises 6.5B$ investment from Nvidia and Microsoft
11/24 Suchir named as witness in NYT lawsuit vs OpenAI
11/24 Suchir dies under mysterious circumstances
12/24 OpenAI announces restructuring away from nonprofit status, and away from control by nonprofit board
1/25 Trump announces Stargate Project (500B$ over 4 years)
When you look at the timeline, you see how inconvenient it would have been to have an ex- high level employee, in charge of data gathering, as a hostile witness in a major court case.
