Ultimately it's the venal leading the blind: The tool does what it's made to do, sold on promises of how rich it could make people, abused by the people trying to make money off it doing things it can't or shouldn't, then the results get laundered by the next blind process (i.e. Google search) that strips it of context.
So people use Chat GPT as a research tool when it can't actually understand or compare research. Or AI content generates SEO-optimized junk pages that shoot to the top of Google, to get the unwary to click and see the ads that page hosts.
