No, not weird - because it still IS being used for those purposes - being applied in one field doesn't mean it is ONLY being worked on in one field, or area - it's not some monolithic blob that plods along in being worked on sequentially from one field to another - AI in general is a tech being worked on by many groups of researchers, etc in many fields, and has already for instance, shown promise in medical and engineering fields.
