I couldn’t stop thinking about this example and how infuriating this particular example makes me.
Robots that replace any human interactions is terrible imho.
But robots that replace *critical* human interactions should be discouraged via policy. Decreasing the number of *critical* human relationships a child will or could encounter is very detrimental to their mental and physical health.
Decreasing the number of human interactions within a society decreases the health of the individual and the society.
The damage from decreased human interactions is (I think proven) really significant. It is on par with what smoking or excessive drinking does to human health.
What do we do with smoking and drinking? We tax it. We had a whole campaign to discourage smoking — and it worked. Smoking is addictive. We accepted that as a society. Smoking is bad for your health. We agreed with that as a country. We did something about it.
These tech companies are the new tobacco companies. We need to fine them bc they know the damage it is causing ppl and they hide the evidence. And they try to get ppl addicted.
Parents use to smoke with their young kids before we knew better. They weren’t bad parents back then. Smoking was just accepted back then as part of the culture.
I’m sure parents might encourage a child or teen to get a robot tutor today — bc they do not know the harm it causes to replace a human tutor with a robot tutor.
Near me, and I’m sure across the country, there was an effort to increase tutoring hubs.
The local school gathered high school students and volunteers to provide free tutoring to middle schoolers or other high schoolers or to elementary students. And there were a couple of adult chaperones with a school building overseeing this after school tutoring. This is a good thing. For everyone involved. Do we want to spend money on robots or on after school human interaction tutoring?
Maybe economically in the immediate short term, it might seem like a robot is cheaper. But the cost to the health of the student and the community is very high.
I am certain, “crunchy” upper class families will realize what I am saying. There is already a movement to get Chromebooks out of the classrooms. A lot of parents and teachers are realizing this. And just like smoking, there will be more robot tutors in lower income neighborhoods, while in higher income neighborhoods, there will be more human tutors.
We need to discourage robots taking over jobs where the end result is less human interactions — especially with children and teens.
