I think there is a solid argument to be made that the additional RL on top of pretraining makes an LLM's goals sufficiently complex that "fancy autocomplete" wouldn't be as apt a description anymore. Yes, modern LLMS (GPT 5, Claude 4.5) are technically predicting the next word, but I feel this interpretation lacks the nuance to describe what the inner workings of these neural networks are actually doing.
