I'm going to say the average person is completely ignorant when it comes to AI. More like a cat looking at its reflection thinking it's a cat... The public feared electricity when it was new because it was like black magic!
I think we should figure out how to keep ourselves in the picture. Maybe we are in fact just stepping stones to something better. To stay relevant we'll need to become cyborgs probably... Scary for a number of reasons! Imagine never forgetting, always being happy, never needing to sleep, etc though. It could be a hellish nightmare or a higher level of being, who knows? I'm not going to say the average person has a clue though...
