I don't know, the art community defends fan artists a lot (as do I). It's pretty much the same thing, using other peoples styles and character design elements. The vitriol shouldn't be going towards the AI and the people who make and use it, just the people who are attempting to sell the work commercially from sources like that.
I'm sorry, I don't think people really have a right to stop people from taking their pictures and putting it through an algorithm. If that's wrong, I find it hard to believe fan art is not also wrong.
