I think you're giving LLMs a little too much credit when they have trouble with counting the instances of a letter in a word, which demonstrates that a question which humans can reason out but which has not been documented extensively because it is so easy for us (say, counting the number of times the letter b occurs in bumblebee), shows the degree to which LLMs need something to have been spelled out to them to be capable of regurgitating it back up.
