We have had infinitely many people creating basically the same thing as someone else, feeling that it was their own creation and later be called out to have ripped them off. We get inspired and learn tvings subconsciously as well as consciously. At least computers and AI could be used to connect similarities between different art pieces to create a kind of graph of inspirations, if we wanted to. And that is something humans can not do. I think we should have learned at the latest when Napster became a thing that we needed to rethink the ”ownership” of intellectual property and creative craft. And I’m not looking for a way to devalue artists, I want the same to be made for every commodity that we can rid of scarcity. When clothes could no longer define if someone was poor or rich based on if it was ripped vs whole or old vs new, we created luxury brands of clothes that were much harder to come by. Why do we create this kind of society when the option exist to give everything to everybody? Do we have a problem with people downloading Sanderson’s books? Yes. Do we have a problem with people borrowing them from a friend or the library? No, but maybe we would have if a world where we allowed a bit stronger protection for creative artists.
