They'll still laugh, but saying something like that used to also evoke some pity for the speaker, in a 'it must be terrible to have such low self-esteem (or such unrealistic standards) that you can't find any companionship beyond a doll' kind of way. I think that sympathy is about to vanish in favor of derision from now on. A LOT of non-tech people who I talk to express not just fear of AI 'taking over' but also a deep disgust towards the people using it for non-essential purposes like companionship or AI-generated images. The sexual component in particular grosses people out to the point I've seen divorce suggested as a response to finding out that your partner was 'emotionally cheating' on you with a chatbot...yeah. the people who were already socially isolated are about to get a lot lonelier if they go down this pipeline.
