And also, most of the people I interact with are kind, but by no means all, and positions of power are believed by many social scientists to be filled with people who are more sociopathic than the average population.
So many AI risk deniers begin with the unexamined premise that AI is being developed by the good guys. I have no way of knowing that the major tech CEOs are moral at all, and aren't just good at pretending. A lot of those CEOs I have positive evidence actually are bad people. But even if I did trust the tech CEOs - we have no way of knowing who else is working on AI and how they're doing it. What we do know is how much AI research and products are freely available to everyone with an internet connection.
