@incivism Syntax is explicitly an "old gen" bot, for example. As in, after enough attempts, their creators were able to get them to be sentient, but they were still bound by programming and other restrictions (for example, their algorithms worked kind of like an actual AIs does, using existing work to logic out how to act. In universe, they do not have souls and "think" like an actual AI, just abstracted to the point of sentience.
New gen robots do have artificial souls and are not nearly restricted by their programming, but they do have hardwired safety net code. One of the safety nets is to avoid machines making their creators irrelevant by putting a limit on their capabilities, such as restricting their ability to download/absorb/process/create new or existing data extremely quickly.
Basically, humans in this world had the foresight to give ChatGPT an inhibitor that keeps it from replacing humans in the things it's not made to do, thankfully. That said, treatment of robots IS still an issue, such as ones with faulty safety nets (even if they haven't done anything wrong) being seen as unstable and outcasted.
