Your hope is more realistic because for an AI to function enough to be of use needs to understand infinite Paper Clips is stupid. An AI can not function properly without full knowledge.
If it is able to look out and say it can turn everything into Paper Clips then it is able to realize that is wrong.
And if it still doesn't realize... well we have super weapons.
If we somehow still die to this then it is human error in mass.
