there are three godfathers and they all found Deep Learning independently and also worked together. They're all Canadian: Hinton, Bengio, Lecun. Bengio is the only real socialist and altruist among them. He never left academia. Hinton joined Google, but is somewhat of a socialist. Retired at 75. Lecun (who is the youngest of the three) is the hardcore capitalist who thinks everything is just gonna be fine. Not surprising, since Lecun heads AI at Facebook and therefore has a lot of money riding on this.
