Yes, it's almost exactly the same thing, our brains are just much better at association than AI is. I can see ONE orange cat and paint a picture of that cat in any position.
The AI has to look at thousands upon thousands of examples of images labelled "orange cat" to associate those words with those shapes and colors. It recognizes that all images labelled "orange cat" have these certain shapes and colors, so it learns what an orange cat is without actually having any understanding of the color orange or of a cat.
When I tell it to reproduce an orange cat, it's not grabbing an orange cat from someone's image and pasting it to me, it's generating shapes and colors associated with the label "orange cat". That's exactly what humans do, we're just way better (right now)
