Let's look at human evolution for a moment. While we cannot say anything for certain, until proven to the contrary, what we think of as sentience did come about spontaneously. As our brains developed to become more sophisticated to allow us to perform new tasks, we eventually reached a point where we were self-aware.
As human society continues to advance, the need for faster and more *sophisticated* AI to perform more complex tasks could have AI reach that same state.
