Magnus Anderson Correct.. that is what may happen. Let me present you with a few alternatives:
1. Yellowstone/Asteroid/Famine/Disease/Ionic Pulse from space/any other time destine apocalypse wipes us out without the aid (nor the prevention of) technology. Done.
2. A. We advance to the point of AI.
B. Through time society eventually accepts the machine as a helpful alternative to labor
C. machine acquires resources to progress beyond the intellectual capacity of the combined world.
D. machine is able to calculate impending doom (as listed in 1.).
E. machine takes appropriate measures needed for survival of itself (and hopefully everything else on the world).
F. humans do something (at this point it doesn't matter because it would be like mosquito trying to meddle in an elephants affairs)
G. humans adapt or destroy themselves accordingly while the machine continues to exist and progress.
