Sentient Intelligence right now is really far away, to be honest.
There are many ways of creating A.I. The method of creating intelligence through imitation of what we have in biological brains (which, I believe, is the only one that would give us sentient beings) has not yet been successful, and it is way too costly and far less useful for mankind.
Most of the A.I. programs, however, only simulate thought by statistical processes. There is currently no real reason to develop sentiency as it is far less useful, far more troubling and far more costly.
