As 2D & 3D artist and Full-Stack Developer with 8 years experience, I want to share my views on this: Personally, I support this invention and the overall growth of the AI tools. But the main reason that lead to the anger of artists is that Stability AI gave too much freedom to the people using their AI. "Freedom is good only when it is controlled." Stability AI's own models indeed use copyrighted images, BUT it never generates replicas of that images. I personally read through their algorithm and it is specifically designed to not generate replicas. Stability AI's mistake is that they gave freedom to users to generate their own custom models using their AI tools. And as we all know, "people are retarded". Users started creating their own custom models with less than 1000 images (which is too small) and algorithm doesn't have an option other than to satisfy user's request by using their super small limited custom models which leads to generation of replicas. Stability AI shouldn't have to give this much freedom to the users. They should just allow use of their own controlled models and that's it. Just like Midjourney AI.
