If people understood what AI was (particularly generative AI or large language models) and how it works, we'd be having entirely different arguments about it.
We should be discussing who owns and profits from AI, not hypothetically discussing the ethics of copyrighting the work of an imaginary ghost in the machine that we created to fill the gaps in our understanding.
I was recently forwarded an offer to use my professional degree to train AI in calculus for $50/hour. I'll teach *people* calculus for money. I'll teach AI calculus for free. But not if it's for the financial benefit of a wealthy investor.
