Saying "theft doesn't matter, because non-theft models are just as good" is just insane. Theft would matter MORE in that case, not less. If stealing and not stealing gives the same results, then it's literally impossible to justify stealing!
Basically, he's destroyed his own side's only defence. AI companies rely on the "but stealing makes us better :(" argument because it's their _only_ reason to justify theft, and he argued against it for some reason!

The purpose behind Van Gogh's copying was to train and develop his own skills, develop his own style, and add his own creativity to the piece of art.
For someone using AI to generate a prompt doing the same thing (i.e. typing "make [painting's name] in [artist's] style", as a general example), their purpose is to effortlessly help in screwing over artists. They _don't_ develop their own ability, they _don't_ develop their own style, and they _don't_ add their own creativity. It's lazy theft.
