Separating art from entertainment doesn't do much either. The only art that wasn't entertaining I probably had to subject myself to for status, to stay in the inner circle of the cultured, and maybe a chance that I will develop a taste for something new. What is art, but fulfilling of spiritual needs? What is actualy scary is that the cultural context and audience expectation is laid on so thick in every peice of media, even a brainless prediction model can figure it out through trial and error. If there are rules of the craft which are taught both to artists and educated consumers of art, they can be implemented in a machine. Color theory, golden ratio, rule of the thirds, show don't tell, whatever. Auteurs like to pretend they are entirely separate from the mainstream and the mundane, but they aren't, otherwise their art would be incomprehensible. You can't put a language model through a rough childhood in an abusive home (afaik), but you can feed it the average of what is known about people who went through it + a randomized mashup of childhood memories and it WOULD fool a psychoanalyst, eventually. Because psychoanalysts operate on patterns too, we all do. We feel sympathy for other people because of the little quirks in their mannerisms or details in stories they tell about themselves, but when AI gets sophisticated enough to fake those, what then? Outside of forced feel-good copium reactions, all this really makes me not optimistic about free will and individuality, and it works both from materialistic and idealistic points of view. Were we alive? Or were the concepts of being alive and human equally as shallow and artifical as whatever ChatGPT had for breakfast?
