This really is focused on the wrong areas. We shouldn't gloss over the safety issues, but even if I ignore those too the job protection angle misses the forest for the trees. Like almost every so-called "shortage" in the labor market this is just a lack of willingness to work for starvation wages, yes, but the issue with automation is systemic. When a new technology is able to mean humans don't have to perform dangerous or monotonous work anymore if the response is "oh no, we're all going to be materially worse off" then the issue isn't automation, the issue is your economic system. Make work jobs are not the answer. The answer to automated mining was never that we should have kept people doing hard, dangerous work where if they never got hurt or died in a cave in they still had a short life from black lung. It's that capitalism means no matter what benefits only flow to the owners of capital. As one person in the video says as a democratic society maybe we should decide how this tool is used. That's so close to the point, a socialist society where production is democratically controlled means we could all benefit from this automation meaning less work for everyone with no cost to living standards instead of that value being extracted only by owners and shareholders.
