Automation eliminates job slots, not just certain types of jobs. It eliminates the need for human labor and so eliminates far more job slots than it creates. What jobs are created are increasingly complex. If we interpret the "IQ Curve" as a distribution of talent, it is easy to see that most people will not be able to do what jobs remain, no matter how hard they try or how badly they want to. Yet, what do we do with the surplused population? I do not believe that universal basic income / guaranteed subsistence income is the answer since it disables and marginalizes the general population. As for $1000/month UBI/GSI, inflation will eat that up in no time. While companies would be forced to pay, they will struggle to get it all back. In any case, that amount of money in no way enables anyone to live beyond debilitating poverty and dependency. We need a better solution, one that engages citizens and encourages involvement in the national wellbeing. A program of national service (not necessarily military) is a far better idea than UBI/GSI and the present "welfare" system.
