More important I think what needs to be emphasized is that it’s not the work, it’s not the jobs that we want. It is the wage that allows us to afford life. If our productivity is increasing so rapidly because of automation, then the rationale should be that we all get to work less. A four day work week with no pay cut, and adjusting the minimum wage, not just to overall inflation, but tied directly to the rising cost of living.
We should all be able to afford our needs. If that means consumer goods go up in price because low wages allowed them to be sold at lower prices, then that’s fine, because what use are consumer goods that we can barely afford if we also cannot afford food, housing, healthcare and transportation?
