I think the issue is that AI won't replace physical labor, but rather will replace human THOUGHT. The concern is not that computers can defeat humans at chess, but that humans will stop playing chess and rather allow the computer to play chess for them. When a LLM writes an essay for a student, there's no sense that the STUDENT has learned anything, nor, indeed, is even still capable of learning something. AI cannot be creative, but it can replace actual creativity through imitation. It cannot think, but it can replace thought through imitation. But since imitation creativity and thought are cheap and abundant, and since our society commodifies everything, it is likely that society will trend that way -- indeed, it already is. Which leaves what, exactly, for humans? THAT is the concern.
