I think the key to a utopian society (in which AI safely exists), is to teach everyone to have personal goals for self improvement, but also community goals. It doesn’t matter what those personal goals are. Everyone is different. But without goals, people grow restless and destructive. There is still plenty to do, such as caring for children and elderly, the sick and the dying. Robots can’t do that as good as a human, no matter how humanoid they look.
With safe AI that provides the basic necessities without humans needing to work to scrape by, people would have the free time to accomplish their personal and communal goals (mental and physical health and wellness, social connection, creativity, preserving the natural beauty of the world instead of destroying it) so long as they don’t grow restless and destructive.
Think about kids. How easily happy they are, because they don’t (or shouldn’t in an ideal situation) have a care in the world. We could live the way a well-cared for child lives, happy and free of socio-economic bias. So long as our basic needs are provided for, and we have the freedom to use our time for good deeds, we could co-exist with AI.
