Ai art won’t actually replace art made by humans because to actually innovate, you have to break away from tradition, while everything ai art makes is designed to be as generic as possible in response to user input.
Think about it. People are perpetually drawn to new experiences, and AI just shows the average aesthetic of a given dataset, so it can't purposefully select design elements to challenge the status quo. That's something only people can understand between themselves. Under these automated systems, the more unconventional the design of the output, the smaller of sample size the input has to be, and at that point it becomes increasingly obvious who the machine is mimicking.
When you paint a picture of something, it's not just another version of that object. It's also a synthesis of your knowledge, values, and intent (let alone that of the viewer). That's what truly draws people to art, not just to look at stuff, and it's not what a mindless tool that's never lived as a human will ever give us.
(Also, I can concede that what this technology does do is let us see the connective tissue between ideas. That itself is valuable in understanding a culture, but so long as people keep asking themselves what an art piece "means", they'll always gravitate towards things that speak on genuine lived experience instead of a facsimile of it.)
