This post is very interesting as are the responses, most of which appear to ratify Prof. Fry's advice. I have been using ChatGPT extensively for programming tasks since the beginning of 2022 and have always been effusive with "please" and "thanks" and have sent many a (well-deserved) compliment for the responses I have received. But I have recently read that copious amounts of energy are being wasted by LLMs in processing "gratuitous" thanks and that messages that serve only to show appreciation for a previous response are doing untold damage to our eco-system and should be avoided. It goes against the grain not to show appreciation, but while I still use "please", I have cut down on "thank yous" unless they are part of a follow-up query. Feedback will be welcome
