I have been working on an essay about art, specifically 2d illustration/painting for almost a month now, and I just got to the point where I've compared Plato's disdain for paintings to the lack of respect and value these creators of the gen ai art programs have for art and artists. At least Plato had a philosophical reason (he didn't think paintings could capture the "knowing" of a subject as well as the subject itself could-but also look at the paintings that were common in ancient greece and it kinda makes sense he felt they were a bit soulless (how I read his "knowing" comment.) The creators of the ai programs just outright dont value art or artists and think of us as commodities they can ripoff and steal. It's super insulting, especially considering I think that a lot of ethical debate could have been avoided if they had just trained on copyright free stuff or asked permission before using art under copyright. It'll be interesting to see the responses in class tomorrow, as I'm a writing major and our professor has a section in the syllabus about gen ai and how it's allowed in certain limits (I disagree with tbh.)
