I've been thinking a lot about how Generative AI is going to change things, and here's my conclusion. AI Art (and other Gen AI) will be like Photography. When Photography first started to be developed, artists had a lot of fear that it would replace them. And it did. However, it also opened up new pathways of expression and new options for incorporating it into work, making art easier, faster, and freer. It created expressionism and modern art. It allowed people to not have to sit for an artist, which opened up many more opportunities for people to have art made of them. And it created whole new kinds of artists, such as photographers, collagists, and photomanipulation. Generative AI is not going to stop people from learning how to make art. It will not stop people from doing the hard part of art, which is putting their ideas together into a cohesive vision. It will not prevent people from learning how to make art in traditional ways, any more than Photography made people stop making paintings. Digital Art didn't kill Traditional Art. Pencils didn't kill charcoal. Cellphones didn't kill Wedding Photographers. Nothing worth having will be lost because people will keep what's worth having alive. All the Gen AIs will do is help create faster. It'll create new kinds of art.
