I am a VFX artist and I am using AI in my personal media art projects. Nevertheless I mainly agree with the ethical critique of the technology. I would say that ethical issues that many people bring in regard of AI are very legit. That’s the reason I am not monetizing my AI works and see them as an open source, so others can also use them as long as they are not monetizing it either.
Though I totally disagree with an art part. It is just so wrong when in order to prove your point you’re taking some shitty AI slop from Facebook comparing it to the academical classical art.
AI as an art form is a part of Media Art. It is not dumb images of a pregnant Shreck. And I don’t know if anyone (from any creative field) would ever be calling it this way.
AI art is done either in combination of ComfyUI (or alternatives) and some other non generative AI tool like Touch-designer, notch and so on. For live performance purpose.
Or in a same way as we do classical production and post production with all the classical set of storyboard sequence, PS, Premiere , After effects or Nuke, Resolve and Blender.
It still has ethical concerns of piracy, that’s true. But the topic of copyrights is an ideological debate, that is really important to have, while comparing “pregnant Shrek” to Picasso is just ridiculous. Because pregnant Shrek was not ment to be art, it doesn’t represent any concept or meaning, it doesn’t have any reflection of the world we share. It is a pop culture symbol not an individual art. So as 90% of images in Midjourney gallery page. And I am sorry but if you’ll paint a pregnant Shrek with an oil on a canvas it would be as slop as it is from midjourney, for the same reasons.
If we are talking about art and not ethics - midjourney is more of an extremely powerful sketching or texturing tool depending on situation. But it is never a final piece of art work done with one prompt.
So from the point of regulations I am pretty much on your side. Regulations are definitely needed. And obviously artists labour should be protected.
The reason I wrote this long text is because I really think we need this discussion in creative community. But in order to get a meaningful results I think we need to address the problem without simplifying it to a take like AI is a pregnant Shrek slop. Because it just not true.
And by the way, I haven’t heard this corp’s take that AI is needed for disabled artist to make art before. Discounting take, not ethical and as many stated in the comments just not true.
PS. Sorry for my English. It is not my native tongue.
