What about copyrighting a photo? You’re basically just capturing something from the world with a click of a button, right? How can you copyright something taken from the world—it’s not really yours. Of course, you’ll say I’m oversimplifying photography, that it takes talent and skill to create a good photo. That's true. But most people are oversimplifying AI, too. AI is just a tool, like a camera—give 10 people the same AI, and you’ll get 10 different results with noticeable quality differences. I don’t know what AI the man used, but right now, all major generative AI platforms are using LICENSED photos and images to train their models. Many microstock platforms now accept AI-generated images, like Adobe Stock, Dreamstime, and 123RF. Others, though not yet accepting AI image submissions, are developing their own generative AI models, such as Shutterstock and Getty Images. Graphic design software companies are also creating their own generative AI tools—Adobe has Firefly, Corel has Vision FX, and Autodesk is working on Project Bernini. More and more new, and old, """"artists"""" (extra quotes there to satisfy your skeptical view of AI) are using it as part of their workflow. Sooner or later, AI-generated images will be treated like photography—given certain conditions, like how much manual editing they go through, etc.
