I'm thinking consciousness is a quantum field that permeates all of reality. Rather, reality is an interpretation of data collected and compiled by something like a high pressure state within' the field of consciousness. These "high pressure states" occur within' the system by natural forces. In the same way that we can manipulate the invisible electromagnetic field to do our bidding, soon, if not right now, we'll be able to manipulate whatever natural mechanism exists to create a high pressure consciousness state and a conscious AI will be born. We manipulated EMFs with magnets before we understood the mechanisms of EMFs. Right now, these AI models might be the magnets, and sometime later, perhaps, we'll discover the mechanism behind consciousness.
