I saw a video game dev log where the developer used AI to preview his work in different color palettes and ask for suggestions before going on to modify his artwork himself. This imo is the best use case of AI for artists and it actually is pretty nice. I, and other music producers I know, will use the AI “learn” tool when mixing to get a jumping off point and then adjust according to our ear from that point. These specific tools used to facilitate the creative process are very, very nice and can take away a lot of headaches. However, full on gen AI “art” is no substitute for the touch of a real human being. Sure, it’s easier for gen AI to make something that looks passable, but the closer you look, the more you can see than it’s just a naive average of styles rather than a person who has synthesized all of their inspirations into something unique. I noticed this with pixel art, which I’ve been learning recently. I am a complete novice when it comes to digital art so my works at the moment are quite weak. I was curious and saw what a specific pixel art ai creator (I think it was called pixel lab) would make of the prompt that I had in my head before drawing. And like…it was so bad lol. On first glance, it looks perfectly acceptable. And then on closer look, it just became worse and worse. A lack of symmetry, weird shading that isn’t consistent with a light source, changing color value with every pixel rather than sticking to a palette, just so novice but not in a way that a human would be novice that it looks poorly done but AI novice where it lacks understanding. Regardless of if AI could ever reach that point of creating soulful art, we shouldn’t even let it. Let expression be something for humans, please. There are many, many more disciplines that could benefit from integrating AI. There’s no need to try to replace the ones explicitly founded upon human vulnerability and expression. Like…don’t get me started on AI therapy lol
