As someone who someone from the aviation sector, this was very familiar. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, most commercial planes had an "autopilot" but really it was only there to hold the plane at altitude, it did not climb, descend, land, or take off on its own. Even the highly advanced autopilots in modern aircraft still require pilot supervision, and unexpected encounters like weather, turbulence, traffic avoidance, or mechanical issues, still require manual input. Plane autopilots came out earlier because one, hand flying a large airliner for several hours a day was too exhausting. And two, aircraft are always spaced incredibly far apart, the federal minimum separation at cruise is 1 mile horizontally and 1000 feet vertically. Because of this, aircraft don't need to worry about traffic lights,, railroad crossings, roundabouts, stop signs, sharp curves, stopped vehicles(or god forbid a vehicle driven by a moron) pedestrians, and animals, because all separation is done electronically onboard, whether this is by 2 way radio or by the onboard radar transponder. The only thing that pilots worry about that can only be done manually is when a flock of birds gets sucked into both of your engines and you have to pull a sullenberger and crash land on a river. Self driving cars on the other hand, unless they are put on a special, grade separated guide way, still have to deal with the same traffic everyone else as to, and at that point, it's not really a self driving car. If we want autonomous transit solutions that aren't shit, just build a grade seperated automated peoplemover, they've been around since the 1970s and have somewhat proven themselves for medium capacity applications, like airports and amusement attractions. Much like autopilot systems on aircraft, the Tesla "autopilot" is nothing more than an advanced driver assist system, and is not(I repeat , NOT)fully capable of autonomous operation. The real solution to solving global warming, preventing automobile related deaths, and reducing the manpower necessary, just build more public transportation, like trains, trams, and buses. The only thing that additional lanes on an urban freeway will do is create even more congestion. It's called induced demand. When capacity is increased on a road, more people will take that road, causing gridlock, and by adding more lanes, more cars are going to assume that the trip will be faster, and get caught in that same gridlock, which never truly disappeared. This is what led to the Katy freeway, a 26 lane monstrosity that's still congested.
