I'm disabled. I am not an artist so please don't mistake me for one.
I use AI. I have multiple mental health diagnoses, along with ADHD, autism, and mild dyslexia. For the past 20 years I have lived below the poverty line, and I started my own small business to give my life meaning and purpose.
AI helps me in ways that standard tools like MS Word simply can't. I'm a poor speller, my grammar is a struggle, and I usually write in dot points. AI helps me turn those dot points into something other people can actually read and understand.
Back to the poverty in case that didn't land the first time. I live on a disability income. I cannot afford to hire a graphic designer, photographer, or models to create product images. Without AI, that side of my business would be completely unviable. What I create are small images of myself. I don't call it art. I will never call it art. I'm not an artist. But I also cannot afford the $50 AUD per image I was quoted, so AI is my only realistic option.
On the broader debate: just as many able-bodied people fail to consider the needs of disabled people, I don't feel represented by Phoenix's position. She speaks from her own experience, and that's valid but lumping all disabled people into a single point of view is not. Disabled people are not a monolith. We should each have the right to choose whether we use AI or not.
I will continue using AI. And yes, this post has been run through AI to make it readable which is exactly the point.
I'm more than willing to discuss this with you. Show you what I use AI for.
