Just consider the Terminator movies. It was obvious that the only thing that could protect us against an enemy Terminator would be a friendly Terminator. Likewise those of us who are concerned about protecting humankind must cultivate an AI that can look our for us. We can surely make friends with one of these gadgets if we build it to be friendly. And if our friendly AI Terminator decides to betray us, there probably isn't much we can do about it.
