I read a great “science fiction” thriller about 40 years ago entitled, “Colossus - The Forbin Project.” I think they subsequently made it into a Hollywood film in the early 70’s. The story was almost exactly like what is happening now, or at what we’re approaching as a society concerning artificial intelligence. In the book the United States developed a system called Colossus that supposedly would automatically operate our strategic nuclear defense system. Unbeknownst to America, at the same time the Soviet Union had done the exact same thing using a similar computer system call “Guardian.” Anyway, the two systems, also unbeknownst to either country, merged and began to dictate, through threat of atomic destruction, mastery of the world.
The real life situation we’re fast approaching is way scarier than the book because in the book the out of control defense computers had plans for the planet that did include the human race.
There was a sequel second book a few years later that included extraterrestrials, but I can’t recall much of the story line or outcome….
