The funny thing is that those AI researchers could be rich beyond their wildest dreams at the cost of not even being able to do anything with it as there isn't going to be a world where that would be relevant when AI takes over.
I'm worried that the floodgates have been opened and there is nothing that can stop us now. Nobody is willing to drop AI and go back to the old way and therefor it cannot be stopped.
