Just train AI on open source content. I'm not anti-generative ai personally, but I think we need stricter copy-right. Also I personally think Capitalism is the issue as well. I'm not sure if blinding ai to google though , the nightshade idea though is a good idea though.
For books educational only is a good way to go because academics do not really benefit from paywalls and the AI is forced to reference them.
In regard to the environmental issues, this does not really work considering it's actually more eco friendly to make a AI movie than hire actors , production team , equipment etc , on top of that data centres are an issue for regular internet use and cloud data too. Seems more like performative moralising imo , if people really they should start with a plant based diet rather than shaming people having fun with ai.
Just my thoughts. I think that technically if AI can transform something enough then it will not violate copyright but I think training the ai should be on public content and open source content and there should be art site zones with nightshade on it.
A worry I do have about AI is hyperrealism and transparency, and also that it's being made by billionaires ..but I do not like people shaming people for playing with generative ai. There's an argument to be had about if they sell or publish stuff but making memes and expressing themselves is what creativity is really about. All of us steal from each other with our eyes and brains , ai is just like a calculator or camera people can still be very creative with it.
Might be an argument though where ai should be democratically mediated and brought up more slowly. I do not think it's very pragmatic to shame the people using it unless they are trying to do harm. I for sure people can be creative and expressive with it if they use it properly and we have good copyright laws.
If an artist feeds their sketches to ai to animate it and fully render it and the ai is trained on open-sourse data besides the art an art consents to giving and the ai machines are solar powered and the artist is vegan , that would be a case where generative ai is not a bad thing at all. I think it's better to have a flexible more compassionate take so people can still express themselves. I do think we need to protect artists jobs but really I think everyone should be able to survive and create without making a living off their creativity but that's the issue with Capitalism not ai.
