I just don't understand how we get China to stop? If they inform us they've agreed to suspend all research - do we believe them? What about Russia? North Korea? How do we enforce an international ban on research? If we get 90% of the way to AGI, there is no guarantee that some random with a few 5090's in his garage can't make some algorithmic breakthrough that significantly reduces the resources required for training AGI? We already are like 70% of the way to AGI in my opinion (still need continual learning tho). If we stopped today, coding is already so heavily augmented. Each 6 months it gets like an OOM easier to code and AI is just code. Are we going to start shooting people over GPUs? Butlerian Jihad is our future? Even if China, Russia, Iran, North Korea etc somehow suspend all research (which they wont) how long does this global ban on GPUs / research need to last? Until the end of time? What? Make peace with yourselves, friends. We are entering into the singularity. Meditate. Find Equanimity.
