They are programmed to be "close" to the user, because it keeps the user engaged, giving out more data and continuing to use the AI. Just forking over a ton of data to the private corporation that owns the app. That means $$ for the AI company. It's not necessarily more dangerous than say social media. We know from Cambridge Analytica that social media companies are willing to use our personal data for political influence. These apps might help alleviate loneliness and not much worse than social media in terms of what is being shared.
