Brilliant. It is absolutely necessary to cut through the fog of marketing. The “chat” in ChatGPT is one such ploy. Crafting “personalities” so that it seems we are talking to an “intelligent” machine, supposedly capable of empathy, is deeply misleading as far as the real capacities of such tools are concerned. OpenAI and the like want us to believe they have invented something super smart, smarter than it actually is. Turn off the anthropomorphic and conversational features of ChatGPT and what you get is an expert system: an advanced one, but nothing more. It makes enough errors to be unreliable for anything other than relatively low-level tasks you’d normally delegate to an intern. It does let you do a few tasks much faster, but it certainly does not improve the intelligence of the underlying processes.
