I beg to differ. Until the advent of AI, technological progress resulted in less physical labour by humans (eg, a farmer with a tractor can plough many more acres in a given time than one with a brace of oxen). AI aims to replace intellectual labour by humans.
Some have said that our current models are more advanced search-engines than true AI. Be that as it may, the best AI apps can already solve post-graduate level problems in maths and physics, reducing the need for relatively-expensive post-graduate students and post-doctoral fellows; yet we're only at the beginning of the AI revolution.
Last, the prognoses of technologists often run ahead of reality; does anyone recall the golden age of freedom, democracy and social cohesiveness ushered in by the advent of the internet and social media? Neither do I. AI, like the computer revolution some 35 ears ago, will certainly bring benefits to mankind, such as the discovery of medicines, but that will be accompanied by a reduction in the need for human workers.
