I think the self-driving cars should be divided into four+ single seat compartments, and then the ride-share software should be able to optimize and pick up more people along the way to reduce fare and improve efficiency. Thus the self-driving cars would essentially be buses of different sizes that are moving flexibly not according to fixed schedules for the most part, but according to need. And of course, in some cases these buses should be able to meet and passengers move between buses to get to the destination.
