There's a surprising misunderstanding in this perspective of consciousness and understanding what AI currently is. AI is a guessing machine that can regurgitate what it's been fed really well. It's been trained on written words, so it can regurgitate the patterns of letters and words and sentences. Saying that AI can output words like "I am conscious and have emotions" is mistaking the menu for the meal. Feelings, emotions, sentience are all things humans struggle to define due to our having been fed an unimaginable amount of sensory data (through our eyes, ears, tongue, skin, etc.) and been forced (due to DNA coding's insistence for survival) to make "sense" of it. I'm surprised Mr. Hinton is missing this basic understanding of how AI (machine learning) works and the utter difference between digital code and analog biology.
